John Doe is absolutely wonderful!
(btw: John Taylor's white streak in his hair reminded me of Johnnie Genocide. Did John Taylor always have that streak? Or was it to make the character look like an aging Johnnie G?)

But I was wondering about any new John Doe movies. Anyone know?

What X Meant To Me

Greetings From The Compound:

I've been meaning to post this for quite a while and since there is nothing good in the way of things to do this morning, theres no time like the present. Probably the biggest influence on my song writing and playing are three people, all in the same band: Billy Zoom, John Doe and Exene from X.

When No Alternative first start playing, I got caught up in the whole "politics of punk" and found myself writing about issues that were of a political nature only. I had no experience with the idea of blending poetry with music (I was too much of hippy hater in those days and I was too stupid to realize that poetry was not the exclusive realm of the flower children, whom I'm still not fond of). I was fast approaching a brick wall intellectually speaking. Then we started opening up for X at a number of shows. Things suddenly changed for me. Billy Zoom turned me on to the whole Rockabilly thing. I found a parallel world in which two distinctly different styles of music were not really that different from each other.

The way Billy was able to combine the two styles amazed me and would lay the ground work for other bands I formed such as the Swinging Possums and The Watchmen. Hell, I even play a Gretsch Rock Jet today because it captures that sound.

As for lyrical content, John and Exene demonstrated in their writing that conventional rules could be broken and subject matter could be found anywhere.

I would have to say that X completely changed the way in which I did everything musicaly. I stopped playing punk for a while and took up Delta Blues/Slide. It was great to try something different that I had to teach myself in the same way I taught my self to play guitar. Still the blues really is original punk (Leadbelly's best work was recorded in a prison). I started playing punk again only because for me, it's where it all began.

I also would credit the Gun Club as an influence as far as writing goes. They were another band who changed the way in which the rest of us write our songs.

So a world of advice for you youngsters writing songs and playing in bands: Don't assmue the "scene" you're involved in is the be all and end all place in which to find influence. There's a whole world of other places to find that "something" that makes the best bands different. Stretch beyond your comfort zone and grow intellectually.

Tom Brosseau & Neko Case

I saw Tom at Buffalo Records in Ventura, really good folky country guy. He plays the Cafe Largo alot and he's from North Dakota and lives near Seattle and he's a friend of John Doe's, toured with him in the SE in a car.
Got his CD and it's great.
I got two Neko Case CD's and she's great.

Sunset junction show

Sunday night last--- What an f ing great X show. John was great, great, great, Billy Zoom spent half the set looking his best and hamming it up for the cameras, and the thrill of being in the mosh pit during "los angeles" in LA made it all amazing. DJ was hitting the drums hard, and yeah, I'm still in love with Exene. Whatta show! And two nights at the Sunset house of Blues in Nov. Ain't life grand?

I saw and met Mr. Doe in Park City last winter...he played an intimate show with just under a hundred people at the ASCAP music cafe, during the Sundance Film Festival. also there were John Hiatt and a great new band Clem Snide...lot of fun...I said hi to John in the washroom..

I feel silly, bein' a big ole fan and such, that I didn't know Mr. Doe was in the Sandra/Ben-Lo movie "Forces of Nature". I was clicking through the glowing box the other night and POOF there was beautiful J.D.

Of course he was playing one of his usual white trash roles, wife beatin', agro man - complete with bad moustache and bleached yellow hair, but he AS ALWAYS was still godlike!! and he got to drive off all angry-like in an old car.

The X Lounge Act went Fabulously!

So Saturday night I performed a 4 song lounge act of Wild Gift songs and it went so well, that I'm thinking about doing the entire album and hitting some clubs with it.

So DAMN funny to hear We're Desperate, White Girl, Universal Corner, and Adult Books in shmaltzy vegas lounge style....with people singing along!! it was a kwak up.

John - and tons of well known musicians, used to come to my house all the time back in the good ol days. One of my friends, GiGi, is married to John and has been ever since they met back in the 80s. GiGi, Debora (who is on my friends list here, and is still my best friend, and who was a major contributor of them getting together) and I and a little tribe of us used to run around together back then in Hollywood. GiGi and I both took college classes together no too long ago. I have gone to X gigs with them. We laugh how they used to sell T-shirts out of thier car after the gigs--now it's Girl Scout Cookies! I've been to their house on several occasions, but they live way the hell out there, and it isn't an everyday occurrance. But they are a great family! All the way down to their pet pig Wilbur! I have hesitated posting this cuz I don't want to sound like a snitch, but I don't think they will mind. I will have to give them a call this week and see if it is cool or not. But for now, this is my story of my affiliation to X.
